Your goals, the rungs to your ladder

By Jean Ricot Dormeus

The world of sports offers a great illustration of the critical importance of goals. For example, in football, every team strives to place the ball in the back of the opponent net as many times as possible. In tennis, you get a point when the opponent fails to return the ball. The players have a system to measure progress and victory. Likewise, goals offer a system that supports progress and success.

Goals give meaning and direction to your business, career, family and hobby. Coasting through life without ambitions and goals stifles your self development. A goal to get a degree in four years points to frequent activities such as attending school, reading, studying and researching. Carrying out these activities allows you to determine that you are on the right track.

Every goal requires a plan of action, possible acquisition of new skills and effective time management. Suppose you decide to set up an online business in there years. You most likely will decide the team, equipment and itinerary that will take you to this destination. Setting a goal without an attendant critical path conjures the idea of daydreaming which leads nowhere.

Consider a pilot who purposes to fly from Washington DC to Paris on a particular day and time. He has a SMART goal: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely. These features characterize the types of goal that will inspire, motivate and sustain you to action.

Have you ever seen a ladder without rungs? Even leaned on the right wall, it wouldn't allow you to climb. Goals work as rungs to your ladder. Use them.
